SOUTH AFRICA
Where We Work
Life Choices-South Africa work is based in Primary and High Schools in three target communities, Athlone, Delf and Manenberg. In its second year of implementation, Life Choices continues to bring a holistic approach to these schools and its work has expanded to 3 new high schools (Leiden High – Delft, Peak View High – Athlone and St. Joseph – Rondebosch).
What We Do
Life Choices-South Africa reaches every single learner from Grade 4 to Grade 12 with its Life Skills program. Seven life skills sessions (40 to 60 minutes each) are conducted during Life Orientation (LO) periods with each class once a year. These sessions are carried out by a pair of young trainers (1 female & 1 male) supervised by the LO Educators. The sessions are designed to be interactive, experiential and to learn while having fun.
Life Choices also provided assistance to the Western Cape Local Government by organizing capacity building workshops and trainings (42 hours) with educators. Life Choices is also proud to report that we have been one of the first programs in South Africa to bring VCT to high schools. For the implementation phase of the mobile VCT in the schools, Life Choices partnered with a highly qualified institution (‘New Start’) to provide these services to students from grades 10 through 12.
Life Choices also employs an auxiliary social worker that works in each school twice a month plus emergency situations. Educators, parents, peer-educators, facilitators and students refer certain students to the auxiliary social worker. Students are assessed and counseled. Parents are informed and in some cases also counseled. Afterwards decisions are taken in order to decide if the case can be resolved with on-going counseling or if it needs to be referred for further support to other specialized organizations, governmental services or institutions.
